In Memoriam: Dr. Nicholas Checkles

Yannis Remediakis HCC News 09 April 2026

Co-Founder and First President of the Hellenic Cultural Center of the Southwest

It is with deep respect and heartfelt sorrow that the Hellenic Cultural Center of the Southwest honors the life and legacy of Dr. Nicholas Checkles, co-founder and first President of our organization, who passed away on March 27, 2026.

Dr. Checkles was a founding pillar of HCC-SW and a man whose life reflected service, intellectual achievement, and an unwavering commitment to Hellenism. His vision helped establish an institution dedicated to preserving and promoting Greek culture, language, and philosophy—an institution that continues to grow and serve the community today because of the foundation he helped build.

HCC-SW - Census 2020: Question #9 About Race

HCC News 24 March 2020

The Decennial Census started on March 12th, 2020

The 2020 Census will ask a series of questions about you and each person who lives with you. When responding, you’ll record the race of each person who is living in your home on April 1, 2020. That is Question #9.

Once you check a category, you’ll also be asked to write in the person’s origin. When asked about your racial/national origins make sure to identify as Greek by writing ‘Greek’ under either ‘White’ or ‘Some other race’.

Be sure all of your family members, regardless of age or citizenship status, are counted as Greek too!

The Census is completely secure. No information collected can be used against you by a government agency or court of law. By law, Census data can only be used for statistical purposes.

Read more details here.

Why is the Census important?

BECAUSE

Federal funds, grants, and support to states, counties, and communities are based on population totals and breakdowns by sex, age, race, and other factors. The Greek community can benefit the most when the census counts everyone. When we respond to the census, we help our community gets its fair share of the more than $675 billion per year in federal funds spent on schools, hospitals, roads, public works, and other vital programs.

Identifying as Greek in the Census will result in tens of millions of dollars in federal funding being invested to support services in our community, including funding for Greek schools, Greek language programs, Greek language services for government-run programs, in addition to funding to support Medicare, aged care, Section 8 housing, and many other services.

Make sure our community counts in the 2020 Census to secure vital funding for services, and to maximize our collective voice for years to come.

Read more details here.

You can complete the Census online using the 12-digit Census ID mailed to you or left at your door by the Census Bureau! Once you have received your code, visit my2020census.gov and follow the instructions to complete the Census online.
