The Cyprus Greek contingent is a 1500 strong Hellenic Army force provisioned by the Cyprus Treaty of Independence of 1959. Being the most organized and coherent Greek force on the island it played a key role in the 1974 invasion of the island by the Turkish armed forces. Its resistance along with a few Greek Cypriot National Guard units, secured most of the historic capital of the island.
