THE BATTLES OF THE CYPRUS GREEK CONTINGENT ELDYK

UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE CONSUL OF THE REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS MR. ANGELIDES

 lohos vareon oplon eldyk

The Cyprus Greek contingent is a 1500 strong Hellenic Army force provisioned by the Cyprus Treaty of Independence of 1959. Being the most organized and coherent Greek force on the island it played a key role in the 1974 invasion of the island by the Turkish armed forces. Its resistance along with a few Greek Cypriot National Guard units secured most of the historic capital of the island to remain under the control of the Republic of Cyprus in the second three-day in August main Turkish offensive. This last, dramatic battle of the Eldyk is the least known, yet heroic battle of Nikosia following the dramatic collapse of the Geneva truce negotiations between the involved parties.

RESTORING THE TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY OF THE REPUCLIC OF CYPRUS IS AN ACT OF COMMON SENSE JUSTICE
